Santa Fe got a double dose of perfection Tuesday as the Volcano Vista boys and girls basketball teams were honored at the New Mexico State Capital.

Rep. Moe Maestas and Speaker of the House Brian Egolf hosted the hoops teams on the Senate floor after Volcano Vista made history in March.

On March 11, the Volcano Vista girls team capped a 29-0 season with a win over Hobbs in the Class 5A state championship game. A night later, the boys team celebrated on the Pit floor after beating Las Cruces in overtime to also finish a 29-0 season as state champions. It was the first time in state history that one school had both its girls and boys teams go undefeated and win a state crown in basketball.

“What a great way to honor our boys and girls historic seasons,” girls head coach Lisa Villareal said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we’re so proud of our kids.”

Tuesday was also historic as the teams became the first to be invited to the Senate floor.

“It was a great experience for both programs,” boys head coach Greg Brown said. “Players and coaches got to meet a lot of representatives.”
