The Volcano Vista High School marching band will be looking to defend its title this weekend at the 42nd annual New Mexico Pageant of Bands.

This year’s event, which will feature more than 2,000 students will be held Saturday at Rio Rancho Ram Stadium. Gates open at 7:45 a.m.

Bands from across New Mexico, including 10 from Albuquerque, will compete against those of comparable size, beginning with the smallest in the morning. A total of 27 bands will take part in the competition, which started in 1980 to provide a competitive arena for displaying the musical and marching skills of local bands.

Volcano Vista, which won the 3A (six-75 members) competition last year, performs at 11:45 a.m.

Tickets are $10 at the gate for adults and $7 for high school and college students.
