Cross-country

The Volcano Vista boys and girls teams, which are each defending state champions, had a good showing Saturday at the APS Metro Championships.

The girls finished fourth out of 11 teams with 104 points. Carysa Marquez finished sixth in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 19:47.60; Mariana Marquez was 17th (21:11.40); Cyara Coriz was 24th (21:37.60); Hailli Begay was 26th (21:48.70); Isa Marquez was 34th (22:01.60); Ariana Kedge was 39th (22:15.80) and Marisa Sena 41st (22:22.80).

The boys finished second with 46 points, 17 more than Rio Rancho, led by Thomas Croshaw’s second-place finish. Croshaw was less than five seconds behind Sandia’s Steven West, who has been one of New Mexico’s best runners.

The Hawks bounced back from their loss to Cleveland in a big way, beating Cibola 57-7 Friday night.
