Volcano Vista’s president is heading south this fall.

Angela Korte, a distance runner and student body president, announced recently that she has signed with New Mexico State.

Korte, a senior who was part of a state championship cross-country team in November, is hoping to do the same on the track this spring.

Volcano Vista girls head track and field coach Elena Schrader said Korte has been a key part of the team.

“She’s  just fantastic on all accounts,” Schrader said. “She’s been with us for all four years. Obviously, we didn’t have all four years of seasons, but she’s been out here in training. We went through those really rough periods during the pandemic, not entirely sure if we were going to be having complete seasons or not, but she was 100% dialed in and committed to our sport, to her family and to everything she does. She gives her 110%. She’s been a team captain for us, and she also is just a phenomenal student.”

During the pandemic, Korte and the rest of her teammates weren’t allowed to compete. But she was still working on her craft.

“You know, being active helps you out a lot,” Korte said. “So during that really difficult year it was really great knowing that I’m still at the top of my game. I’ve also had people in my teammates that I could see everyday. That really helped.”

The decision to attend New Mexico State was an easy one for Korte.

“I’m super happy, I didn’t think it was gonna happen with COVID, but it did, and I’m beyond thrilled about it,” Korte said. “They’re super welcoming down there, so that had a lot to do with it. They’re really understanding, too, because missing a whole season of track and field and cross-country, it’s really hard to build up your stats that way. But you know, the coaches down there, everyone down there, they’re super friendly. The team, the girls, it’s just a great atmosphere.”
